The shadow of racism persists: five fans sentenced for insults to Vinicius Jr.
The Valladolid Court has sentenced five individuals who hurled racist insults at Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr. during a match in 2022.

The fight against racism in Spanish football has taken a step forward, although much work remains to be done. This Wednesday, the Provincial Court of Valladolid condemned five fans who, during a match between Real Madrid and Real Valladolid on December 30, 2022, insulted Vinicius Jr. with racist expressions. The sentence includes a penalty of one year in prison, four years of disqualification, and fines ranging from 1,080 to 1,620 euros.

The accused, who have accepted the sentence, directed phrases such as "puto negro" and "hijo de puta" at the player, highlighting the severity of the situation facing Spanish football regarding racism. Such attitudes not only affect players but also reflect a social problem that must be eradicated.

Real Madrid reacted to the sentence with an official statement expressing satisfaction with the judicial resolution, while also emphasizing the need to continue working to eradicate racism in sports. In the statement, the club asserts: "The Second Section of the Provincial Court of Valladolid has today issued a guilty verdict against the five individuals who, from their seats in the José Zorrilla stadium, directed racist insults at our player Vinicius Jr."

Despite this conviction, the Real Madrid fanbase has occasionally shown contradictory attitudes towards their Brazilian star. Mijatovic, a former player of the club, pointed out that even the fans themselves have complained about Vinicius's attitudes, raising a dilemma about the support the player receives from his own team. "The fans themselves complain about his attitudes," Mijatovic remarked, suggesting that the path towards acceptance and respect in football is still long.

The conviction of these five fans serves as a reminder that racism has no place in sports, and that every action counts in the fight for a more inclusive football. The football community must unite to ensure that incidents like this do not happen again, and that all players, regardless of their background, are treated with the respect they deserve.
