In a season finale marked by tension, Athletic Club fans have once again taken center stage, but not for their unwavering support of their team. During the match against FC Barcelona, held at San Mamés, several offensive chants were recorded directed at both the Catalan club and its president, Joan Laporta.
The complaint filed by LaLiga highlights that these chants occurred at least six times throughout the match, particularly from the lower north stand, where the Athletic's cheering section is located. Among the most repeated chants, the “puta Barça, puta Barça, eh” was heard at two key moments of the match, specifically in the 2nd and 78th minutes.
A hostile atmosphere towards Barça
However, the chant that drew the most attention was the “Ohlelée Ohlalàa, being from Barça is being a subnormal”, a distorted version of a traditional Barcelona chant, which was sung on three occasions: minutes 5, 33, and 58. Such attitudes are not new, as Athletic fans have shown hostility towards Barça on several previous occasions, including throwing bills in the past over the 'Negreira Case'.
Moreover, President Laporta was not spared from the attacks, as in the 5th minute of the match, the chant “Laporta, putero, where's the money!” was clearly audible to Laporta himself, who was in the stands alongside Jon Uriarte.
LaLiga has not only denounced these chants but has also referenced other incidents occurring in different matches, such as pitch invasions in other stadiums. Undoubtedly, such behaviors tarnish the essence of football and the healthy rivalry that should prevail in the sport.
The atmosphere at San Mamés, charged with tension, reflects the historical rivalry between both clubs, but it is essential to remember that respect should be the foundation of any competition. Athletic fans, known for their passion, should find ways to express their support without resorting to offense.
