Marc-André Ter Stegen, the goalkeeper for FC Barcelona and the German national team, finds himself at a crossroads that could define his future in football. Despite being a cornerstone in the German goal, his situation at the Catalan club has become complicated following the arrival of new goalkeepers and the imminent renewal of others.
With the signing of Joan García and the possible renewal of Wojciech Szczesny, Ter Stegen's chances of regaining the starting position are dwindling. Former footballer and German football legend Lothar Matthäus has expressed concern for the goalkeeper's future, suggesting that it would be best for the German to seek an exit from Barça as soon as possible.
Matthäus commented in an interview with 'Sky Germany': "The club has its interests, and if Barça has another goalkeeper, it is a risky bet for Ter Stegen. There comes a time when the coach, Julian Nagelsmann, can no longer justify his starting position if he is only sitting on the bench." These words reflect the growing pressure on the goalkeeper, who has had to deal with injuries that have affected his performance in recent seasons.
The former Bayern player also understands Barcelona's decision to seek a younger goalkeeper with potential. "A club has the right to look for a younger goalkeeper for the future, who could also be more economical. For Barça, it is crucial to reduce the wage bill and remove players from the roster to be able to sign others," Matthäus argued.
In this context, Manchester City may be interested in Ter Stegen. Although the English club has closed the signing of Marcus Bertinelli as a third goalkeeper, the situation of Ederson and Stefan Ortega is not entirely clear. Matthäus suggested that the German could be a viable option for the 'citizens', as "Ter Stegen could be the City's goalkeeper for the next three or four years."
Ter Stegen's future is uncertain, but his desire to remain at Barça is firm. Despite the speculation, the goalkeeper has made it clear that his intention is to report to the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper to start preseason. However, the pressure from the board and competition in goal could force a difficult decision in the coming months.
