Joan García, the new goalkeeper for FC Barcelona, has given his first interview as a Barça player on the club's official platform, Barça One. In this conversation, the 24-year-old keeper from Sallent de Llobregat did not hide his excitement about taking such a significant step in his career after four seasons with RCD Espanyol.
"I was really eager for this to happen and to be a 100% Barça player," García stated, acknowledging that the decision to leave the periquito club was not easy. "It was intense days and weeks. I consulted with myself, with my family... but I was really convinced that this was the step I had to take," he added.
The young goalkeeper also expressed his satisfaction with having made this decision, despite the emotional complexity it entails: "I had some strange feelings. But I am super convinced that it was the right step". For García, joining Barça represents a fulfilled dream: "When you start playing, what do you dream of? You dream of fighting for everything, winning titles, and being at the highest level. Luckily, I have the opportunity to do that".
Competition in the Barça Goal
Regarding the competition for the starting position in the azulgrana goal, García did not seem intimidated. "When you are in a team of this level, there has to be competition; it is very healthy for it to exist. The daily demands make us all better," he commented, referring to the possible renewal of Szczęsny.
The new goalkeeper also made it clear that he is ready to take on the challenge:
"I have a lot of excitement to give it my all. The coach will decide, but I am prepared and willing to play if given the opportunity"
Adapting to Barça's Style
García emphasized his desire to adapt to Barcelona's playing style and improve his performance: "I am demanding of myself and see things I need to improve. I am convinced that I can adapt to the new style". Additionally, he showed his enthusiasm for starting his adventure at the club:
"I only think about the first day at the Ciutat Esportiva when I put on my boots and go to train. I hope there are many years of many titles and successes"
The goalkeeper also expressed eagerness to work under Hansi Flick: "Preseason sessions could start tomorrow", he assured with a smile.
Joan García's Future in the Spanish National Team
On the international front, Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente has commented on García's future in the Spanish National Team. In a recent interview, De la Fuente highlighted that the new Barça goalkeeper has the opportunity to be called up, although he acknowledged the existing competition in his position.
"Joan García has been with me in the U21. I know him well. He has the opportunity, if he earns it, like everyone else, to come," the coach stated, making it clear that the quality of goalkeepers in Spain is exceptional.
With his arrival at Barça, Joan García is not only looking to establish himself at the club but also to pave his way into the national team. His ambition and talent place him in a privileged position to achieve this.
