The future of Robert Lewandowski with the Polish national team seems to be taking a positive turn. After a controversy that led him to renounce his participation in the last FIFA window, the FC Barcelona striker may be ready to return to the national team for the upcoming double-header of qualifiers scheduled for September.
According to the Polish newspaper 'Przeglad Sportowy Onet', the president of the Polish federation, Cezary Kulesza, is seriously considering the return of Jerzy Brzęczek to the national team bench. Brzęczek, who previously managed Poland from 2018 to 2021, had a complicated relationship with Lewandowski, but the federation believes that his return could be key to convincing the striker to don the national jersey again.
An anticipated return
The departure of former coach Michal Probierz, who was dismissed after a series of disappointing results, has opened the door for Lewandowski's possible return. The forward, Poland's all-time top scorer with 85 goals in 158 matches, could regain the captaincy if he decides to join the team for the crucial matches against the Netherlands and Finland, scheduled for September 4 and 7.
These matches are part of the first international break of the 2025/26 season, and FC Barcelona hopes that Lewandowski will not be absent, as the club prepares to return to Spotify Camp Nou in mid-September, either for matchday 4 or 5 of LaLiga or for their debut in the UEFA Champions League.
The dream of a third World Cup
Lewandowski's main goal is to participate in his last World Cup, set to take place in 2026. Despite turning 37 in August, the striker remains in excellent physical shape and is determined to leave his mark on this tournament. In his two previous appearances, he accumulated 7 matches, 2 goals, and 1 assist, but his dream of advancing beyond the group stage remains alive.
With Euro 2028 on the horizon, Lewandowski may be facing his last chance to shine in a major international tournament. After the World Cup, it is speculated that the Barça '9' could leave the club on a free transfer, possibly heading to a less competitive league like that of Arabia.
